Imagine a trip to the bottom of the Savannah, airplane to the lodge’s runway, lodging in ecological cabins, rivers and incredible fauna. But above all the capture of a great trophy, a fish as exotic as it is beautiful, the peacock bass. And no, I am not talking about a safari in Africa. I am talking about a great fishing experience in the Colombian savannah.
This area of Colombia in the district of Vichada is internationally known for being one of the best spots in the world for peacock bass fishing. Here you can find many of its different types (Cichla temensis, C. orinocensis and C. intermedia). The mere fact of catching any of its variants is already an adventure in itself.
The exotic peacock bass, a species that comes from the Amazon River in Brazil, is as intelligent as it is aggressive, explosive and very territorial. Its diet is varied but it commonly attacks frogs, lizards or iguanas, which is why it attracts a lot of anglers who like fishing with surface lures. The best thing is that its aggressive attack makes it a challenge to catch.
It can be fished, spinning or fly fishing. Once it is caught, is when the photo and video session with this beautiful specimen begins. Afterwards it is released to maintain this beautiful ecosystem as a whole.
The fishing experience is six days fishing every day, either in the Caño Gavilán river or in private lagoons exclusive for sport fishermen where the peacock bass is waiting to put up a great fight. On this fishing trip you will also find payara, king sardine, arawana, peacock bass and striped catfish, among other species.
Special service for Anglers and a first class lodge
Wherever you are fishing, at lunch time, the camp staff will be preparing a delicious lunch of Colombian food for you to enjoy under the cool shade of a tree. Afterwards, you will continue fishing in a session where you will end up delighted and exhausted.
The fishing camp is new, it is an eco-hotel with bungalow type cabins that has all the services that a camp in the middle of the Savannah can provide. There is a bar in a giant palapa especially for resting after an intense fishing session. A place for its famous BBQ’d and tatemado pig and a cozy area for a good bonfire where fishermen sit to watch the sunset and talk very comfortable.
Short but intense season
The peacock bass season is only three months a year, from January to March. So it is recommended to reserve the date of the trip in advance because they are sold out. Many anglers who come have such a good fishing experience that they reserve their spot for the following season.
There is no better experience than getting to know a country by fishing. Here in this fishing trip you will get to know Colombia. Starting because the starting point is its capital Bogota, where you can arrive from anywhere in the world to its famous International Airport known as El Dorado. Once in Bogota you will depart on a charter flight from Guaymaral Airport directly to the lodge. That’s right, the lodge has its own airstrip so there is no need to travel by land, how cool is that!
Very few people will be able to tell this story, lifelong fishing memories. And you, are you ready for the Colombian adventure?
